How to Avoid Crypto Scams: 12 Warning Signs for Beginners

Learn to recognise fake support, recovery-phrase theft, guaranteed-return claims, approval traps, impersonation, and urgent crypto payment scams.

Most crypto scams rely on urgency, impersonation, secrecy, or impossible promises. Slow down, verify through an independent official channel, and never share recovery information.

The 12 warning signs

  • Someone asks for your recovery phrase, private key, password, or one-time code.
  • A stranger contacts you first and claims to be support.
  • You are promised guaranteed returns, doubled funds, or risk-free profit.
  • You must pay crypto in advance to unlock a job, prize, refund, or withdrawal.
  • The sender creates urgency and tells you not to speak to anyone.
  • A government, bank, exchange, or utility supposedly needs crypto for “safe keeping.”
  • A link uses a misspelled domain or asks you to install remote-access software.
  • A wallet prompt appears that you did not initiate.
  • A token or NFT appears unexpectedly and directs you to a claim site.
  • A QR code is supplied by an unsolicited caller or message.
  • A platform shows profit but demands another deposit before withdrawal.
  • The only proof is a celebrity image, screenshot, testimonial, or private group.

Fake support and recovery scams

Scammers monitor public posts for people reporting wallet problems, then reply or send a DM pretending to help. They may direct the victim to a fake validation site, ask for a recovery phrase, or request screen sharing. Real support can investigate public transaction details without taking control of your wallet.

Navigate to the official support site yourself. Do not use a phone number or link supplied in an unexpected reply, message, pop-up, or email.

Payment and investment impersonation

The FTC warns that scammers impersonate businesses, government agencies, employers, and romantic interests to demand cryptocurrency. The story changes; the payment pattern does not. The victim is pressured to buy crypto and send it to an address controlled by the scammer.

A legitimate employer does not require an upfront crypto payment to release work. A legitimate reward platform does not ask a user to deposit funds so that a verified reward can be unlocked.

What to do before signing

  • Read the domain one character at a time.
  • Confirm you initiated the action on that site.
  • Read whether the prompt is a message or transaction.
  • Check the asset, amount, destination, and permissions.
  • If the prompt is unclear, reject it and ask through an official channel.

If you think you were scammed

Stop sending funds and stop communicating with the suspected scammer. Disconnect the affected wallet from applications, move remaining assets to a new secure wallet if you can do so safely, change compromised passwords, and contact the relevant wallet or exchange through its official support route.

Keep transaction signatures, wallet addresses, screenshots, messages, emails, and dates. Report the incident to the appropriate authorities in your country. In the United States, the FTC directs users to ReportFraud.ftc.gov and lists additional agencies for crypto-related fraud reports.

Common questions

Questions beginners ask

Can support recover my wallet with the seed phrase?+

Anyone with the phrase can control the wallet. Do not share it. Legitimate support should never ask for it.

Is every request for crypto payment a scam?+

Crypto can be used for legitimate payments, but an unexpected person demanding advance payment, secrecy, or urgent action is a strong scam signal. Verify the recipient and reason independently.

Can blockchain transactions identify a scammer?+

Transactions create public evidence, but a wallet address does not automatically reveal the person controlling it. Preserve the records and report them rather than attempting recovery through another stranger.
